4.2 Reduced Scale, Semi-Quantitative Modelling of Accident Behaviour in Water Reactor Primary Circuits Using Refrigerant 12

It is shown that the equation of state and the conservation laws for mass, momentum and energy of a two-phase fluid may be reduced to non-dimensional form by defining a characteristic length Lo, mass Mo and time-scale To for any geometrical configuration containing the flowing mixture. When this is done for steam-water and for Refrigerant 12, a remarkable correspondence between the two sets of dimensionless equations is obtained when the ratios of Lo, Mo and To in the two systems are at certain fixed values. Since Lo in the R-12 system is approximately 1/11th of that in the water system, the interesting possibility is raised that a large part or even the whole of a water reactor primary circuit could be modelled at reduced scale. If this is feasible, it would represent a powerful tool for the analysis of the safety of water reactor systems. The advantages and limitations of such a model are discussed.
