ABSTRACT

Some real life fouling data is obtained in a refinery plant in which crude oil is heated up before it goes through the distillation process. The crude pre-heat train is in fact a heat recovery system in which the heating fluids used are composed of mixtures of hot distillation products for optimum energy savings considerations. Three cells composed each of three in series shell and tube heat exchangers are concerned by the present work. The results obtained are presented in the form of fouling resistance versus time curves plotted separately for each heat exchanger cell. The fouling process is found to follow the Kern-Seaton exponential model with however, some discrepancies that may be the result of some plant or external and unavoidadable technical difficulties. For the three cells under concern, pressure drop measurements inside the exchanger tubes are also performed and the results presented.
