ABSTRACT

The entropy generation downstream of a two-dimensional square rib of height k+ ≈ 14.2 was deduced from laser Doppler velocimetry data. This flow involves interaction between the shear layer evolving over the rib and the transitioning wall boundary layer growing after reattachment. At the last station, x* = (x − xk)/k ≈ 138, deduced values of entropy generation rates agreed with expectations for developed turbulent boundary layers where a common approximate prediction technique becomes adequate. However, as with bypass transition, this technique overpredicted the integral entropy generation rate during transition since it neglects a term for convection of turbulent kinetic energy that is significant.
