ABSTRACT

The paper presents recent work performed to extend the range of Large-Eddy Simulations (LES) to complex inhomogeneous high Reynolds number turbulent flow and heat transfer. A two-layer LES wall model for momentum and heat transfer in a generalized coordinate system is applied to various high Reynolds number flows in conjunction with the synthetic eddy method (SEM) for the generation of turbulent inlet conditions. Representative results in stationary and rotating turbulent channel flow, backward facing step geometry, and swirl flow in a can combustor are shown. Results show that the model is quite effective in predicting the flow and heat transfer without significant loss in accuracy while reducing the computational cost between one to two orders of magnitude.
