LES of Film Cooling Upstream an Airfoil/Endwall Junction to Suppress Horseshoe Vortex and Endwall Heat Transfer
ABSTRACT
In this study, the effect of film coolant injection on the formation of horseshoe vortex was investigated by LES (Large Eddy Simulation) at the leading edge region of a symmetric vane. The comparison of film cooling effectiveness profiles between LES and former wind tunnel tests using a PSP (Pressure Sensitive Paint) technique shows good agreement. It is found that insufficient injection of film coolant can not only fail to suppress the formation of horseshoe vortex but also reinforce the growth of the vortex. In addition, the effect of film coolant injection on the endwall heat transfer was examined. It is suggested that film coolant injection upstream the leading edge has a potential both to cool the endwall and to reduce aerodynamic losses simultaneously.
