ABSTRACT
Windows are the primary source of energy loss in building envelopes. In this chapter, we compare the thermal performance of existing and state-of-the-art window technologies by using industry-established figures of merit. The performance needs of windows can vary drastically depending on climate and occupant needs; therefore, here we focus on the strategies to control the optical and thermal properties to optimally satisfy building needs. We discuss designs and technologies that address radiative, convective, and/or conductive heat transfer using a variety of approaches, such as glass coatings, active transmittance control, noble gas fills, and thermal breaks.
