PERSISTING DESPITE THE ODDS: RESILIENCE AND COPING AMONG WOMEN IN ENGINEERING

Despite more than three decades of focused attempts to broaden participation in engineering, women continue to represent less than 15% of the current engineering workforce. Experiences of sexism, gender stereotyping, and delegitimization typify the chilly climate characteristic of engineering fields. Nonetheless, women continue to demonstrate considerable resolve to endure in the field. The present study examined the resilient coping strategies employed by 15 women in engineering. Results revealed that women still encountered gendered and stereotyped experiences as well as broader environmental obstacles that perpetuate the unwelcoming engineering climate. Despite these challenges, women employed a myriad of resilient coping strategies to create their success. These included perseverance, asserting one's legitimacy, cultivating support and belongingness, recognition of strengths, and meaningful impact as a reason to thrive. Implications and future research directions are discussed.
