Modeling Light Propagation in Turbid Media with Microwaves

Laboratory set-ups are described that can be used to study the propagation and scattering of light through turbid media by modeling the process with microwaves. In the course of modeling, the size of model particles should exceed that of the actual particles by a factor equal to the wavelength ratio of the microwaves (2-3 cm) and the light (∼0.5 μm). With respect to the microwaves, the refractive index of the model particle material was the same as of the actual particles with respect to visible light. The set-up has been used to obtain the scattering functions and frequency-contrast characteristics of the silver bromide photographic layers were obtained. The transmission coefficient T and the scattering factor Q have been studied against the diffraction parameter ρ for the ensembles of cubic particles having different coefficients of overlapping η.
