Applicability of Two-layer Surface Electrodynamic Model for Inverse Problems in Passive Remote Sensing

The solution of inverse problems in passive remote sensing was discussed in a large number of publications [1-6]. However, most of these papers contain no strict mathematical analysis of the applicability of various surface models from the standpoint of credibility of the parameter estimates obtained. The only exception is [7], where, within the framework of the proposed general theory of optimal parameter estimation for arbitrary surfaces, a method for evaluating the potential accuracy of estimates is discussed. In accordance with this method, the potential errors (variances or RMS values) are evaluated as the diagonal elements of the inverse to the Fisher information matrix [8]. This accuracy analysis makes it possible to select the observation conditions at which the expected errors are RMS smallest. This method was applied in [9] to the optimization of the sensing conditions for a flat uniform surface. In the present paper, the method is extended to the case of a two-layer flat uniform surface.
