Signal Detection in Gaussian Noise by Using Third-Order Test Statistics

The problem of detecting a deterministic signal embedded in the additive Gaussian noise is considered by using statistical decision theory, the Neyman-Pearson criterion and novel third-order test statistic (TS). Performances of signal detection for traditional energy second-order TS calculated as the peak value of the matched filter (MF) output and the third-order TS computed as the peak value of third-order moment function estimated for a random process observed at the MF output are investigated and compared between each other. The performance of signal detection is evaluated and studied by using binary hypothesis test, likelihood ratio and probability of detection curves calculated for the second- and third-order TSs. Results of computer simulation demonstrating the benefits of third-order test statistics comparing with conventional second-order statistics are represented.
