The transformation of an incident wave by random irregularities of the wall of an over-dimensional waveguide is studied with the aim to analyze a possibility to suppress efficiently self-excitation in gyrotron amplifiers. The principle of operation of a high-efficiency microwave absorber is proposed. The absorber is efficient in a broad band of frequencies and a wide range of mul-timode waveguide modes. "Cold" measurements of the device characteristics are presented and the suppression of self-excitation in the compression region of high-power gyrotron amplifiers is demonstrated.
