Radio Acoustic Sounding Systems built on the traditional bistatic scheme preclude the weather data selection at the lower section of the sounding path. This is due to complexity of the diffraction solution. The bistatic RASS have a delay between the sending of sounding packet and the beginning of signal reception. It was shown that the value of this delay corresponds to the Fresnel zone entry time of the sounding sending. Using the Fresnel approximation will considerably simplify the diffraction solution and, subsequently, will reduce the systematic error while determining meteorological parameters in the surface layer of the atmosphere.
