LAMINAR FORCED CONVECTION HEAT TRANSFER OF YIELD-STRESS SHEAR-THINNING LIQUIDS IN SINUSOIDAL CORRUGATED-PLATE CHANNELS OF PLATE-AND-FRAME HEAT EXCHANGERS

Hydrodynamics and heat transfer of yield-stress shear-thinning fluid flows, for which the rheology is modeled by the Herschel-Bulkley constitutive relationship, through wavy-plate channels are characterized. The duct, described by its sinusoidal-wave aspect ratio (twice amplitude by half wavelength) of 0.5, is maintained at uniform wall temperature. Flows in the generalized Reynolds number range of 10 ≤ Reg ≤ 1000, and with Hedström number He = 300, are considered to highlight viscoplastic effects, which constitute a shear-thinning flow-behavior index of n = 0.54, and yield stress of τy = 1.59 N/m2 at a generalized Reynolds number of Reg = 10 (near the lower limit for inertiadriven flow). Moreover, n = 1.0 represents a Bingham plastic rheology, and n = 0.8 is considered for intermediate viscoplasticity. Viscous damping of swirl at low Reg, but its accentuation with increasing Reg and shear thinning of the flow, alter the velocity and temperature fields considerably in comparison to Newtonian flow. The concomitant modulation of heat transfer performance as well as its enhancement are delineated in the results for Colburn factor j and Fanning friction factor f.
