OPTICAL PROCESSING OF PIV IMAGES

Although particle image velocimetry (PIV) today is widely applied to flow measurements, methods of processing PIV recordings are still under development, and basic questions about the qualities of different processing schemes are still under investigation. PIV image processing requires so much power that the processing of a single PIV image is still relatively slow on the low-end computers normally used for the operation, or relatively expensive if faster processing is implemented. At the same time the resolution required of the processed PIV data is relatively low, which opens the possibility of using various forms of parallel processing, e.g., optical Fourier processing. This article surveys and compares the various processing schemes and comments on possible future developments.
