Ethics of Medicine, Biology and Bioengineering at the New Critical Crossroads for Our Species—Beyond Aristotle and Hippocrates

George Bugliarello
Polytechnic Institute of New York University, Six MetroTech Center Brooklyn, NY 11201

Краткое описание

Today's advances in genetics, biomachines and synthetic biology are bringing our species to a new critical crossroads in its evolution. They are so sweeping in their potential consequences—way beyond what Aristotle or Hippocrates might have envisioned—as to exacerbate today's concerns about the ability of health care systems to deliver these benefits equitably, without bias or conflicts of interest. This requires an ever greater understanding of the factors involved in reaching ethical decisions in medicine, as well as biology and bioengineering, and of the conflicts among the ethics of different professions. We can either accept an increasingly fragmented ethics mosaic, or endeavor to pursue the bolder but more difficult and uncertain path of building a self-consistent, not self-contradictory ethics edifice harmonizing ethics across professions and disciplines.
