Calcium carbonate scaling is a problem that may be of importance in several areas of industry, but that is yet to be fully understood, specially in regards to the working principles behind anti-incrustation devices. The interaction of particle dynamics, turbulent and reactive phenomena makes the subject especially complex, and the predictive capability of existing theories has a lot of possibility for improvement.
Here, a model for scaling in turbulent pipe flows from the literature was modified and applied to a case of calcium carbonate deposition. A chemical reaction model was also coupled to the calculations in order to enable the prediction of the solution properties.
The model results were compared to experimental measurements of particle size, deposition rate, pH and conductivity, and some differences were identified.
