The problem of thermo mechanical failure in tubes and ducts of nuclear plants has involved large experimental and theoretical investigations in recent years. Among the causes, one can cite thermal fatigue associated with intermittent and instable variations of the thermal field. Indeed, cooling systems of nuclear power plants are subject to temperature fluctuations due to the mixing of hot and cold fluids in the so-called mixing zones. These fluctuations can cause thermal fatigue damage and then alter the optimal functionality of the plants.
We carry out in this study a thermo mechanical study in the T-junction area for mixing a cold with the hot fluid downstream a 90° angle elbow. The geometry consists of a branch pipe connected as a T-junction to a main pipe having a horizontal straight part, an elbow of 90° angle, and a vertical straight part where the branch is connected. High-pressurized water at 613° K flows into the main pipe. The branch pipe discharges an over-pressured water at 703° K.
A comparison of the vorticity field obtained with k−ε turbulence model and Large Eddy Simulation (LES) model has been conducted. It has been shown that the LES model allows tracking correctly high amplitude and frequencies fluctuation of the small scale eddies in the mixing zone. Therefore, this model has been used for conducting a parametric study of the influence of the position of T-junction to the elbow on the thermal stresses induced downstream the junction. The numerical results are analyzed critically and a better T-Junction position is localized.
