Cinematographic PIV and OH PLIF operated at kHz repetition rates are emerging techniques providing new perspectives for understanding turbulent reactive flows such as combustion. This contribution discusses the most recent development in laser and camera technology and provides application examples to study transient phenomena such as flame extinction in turbulent flames or cyclic variations in modern Otto engines.
