ANALYSIS OF METHANE PRODUCTION FROM A POROUS RESERVOIR VIA SIMULTANEOUS DEPRESSURIZATION AND CO2 SEQUESTRATION
摘要
The present research investigates methane recovery from marine hydrate reservoirs via depressurization and simultaneous CO2 sequestration. The focus is on exploring the possibility of CO2 injection that enhances CH4 recovery. Particular emphasis has been laid on the quantification of CO2 hydrate and secondary CH4 hydrate formations. A Darcian, multiphase, unsteady, non-isothermal, kinetic model is proposed to enforce the conservation of mass, momentum, and energy in a porous reservoir. The model equations are discretized and numerically solved to simulate the transport phenomena in the hydrate reservoir, bounded by a depressurization and injection well. While the results confirm enhancement in the methane recovery rate due to CO2 injection, the enhancement is largely attributed to the displacement of CH4 by CO2. The hydrate formation of CO2 is quite slow and does not have any significant influence on the overall dynamics of methane recovery. Since CO2 is trapped in the reservoir, the proposed technique promises an enhanced rate of CH4 recovery without sacrificing the structural integrity of the marine geologic formation.
