摘要

A metallurgist proceeding to the quenching of a metallic part for obtaining an alloy with high mechanical properties has to look for a compromise between two opposite necessities :

    - a fast cooling rate is necessary to provide the metastable structure presenting wanted properties
    - high temperature gradient are to be avoided not to introduce between the different zones of the parts any dilatation differences responsible, after cooling, of non reversible stresses or deformations.
Two cases are described :
    - the heat treatment of a wire getting off a rolling will (patenting) which needs a very accurate cooling rate associated with precise surface temperature condition introduced by structural problems.
    - the heat treatment of forged aluminium parts which introduces a concept of optimal cooling rate.
A cooling technique able to provide precisely controlled high cooling speeds is described. It consists on using water spray piloted by a real time process control computer.
