ABSTRAKT

Heat pipes have been widely used for various space applications e.g. satellites, space stations, space probes etc. Objects operating in space have to work in very harsh thermal environment. So, satellites and other objects working in space encounter many thermal problems. Heat pipe is a device which offers solutions for many thermal problems encountered by objects operating in space. In this paper, unique thermal environment of space in which satellites have to operate, is discussed. Various thermal problems and other challenges in designing satellites are highlighted. Many applications of heat pipes in satellites are explored. Need of variable conductance and micro heat pipes in satellites are also explored. An effort is made to investigate the novel applications of heat pipes in satellites. New research areas and concepts for use of heat pipes in space are also suggested.
