Meeting Report: Sixth International Conference on Ethical Issues in Biomedical Engineering
ABSTRAKT
Ethical issues in biomedical engineering is a vital topic that needs our attention and must be addressed. In April 2011, members from various professions including physicians, engineers, and scientists attended the Sixth International Conference on Ethical Issues in Biomedical Engineering at the Polytechnic Institute of New York University. Biomedical engineers, researchers, physicians, philosophers, and attorneys all gathered together to discuss and present their work on the subject of ethical issues challenging the growing field of Biomedical Engineering. A variety of concerns, suggested solutions, educational programs, research questions, and more were presented in a rich informative array of approaches. Subjects ranged from basic ethical practice in human and animal research, authorship, disclosure, confidentiality, informed consent, ethics of regenerative medicine, ethics of end of life care, stem cell research, and financial conflicts of interest. One of the keynote speakers discussed questions about how organ transplantation has grown into a black market that exploits the poor in developing countries. The second keynote speaker discussed how to regulate the risks of emerging biotechnologies. The Seventh International Conference on Ethical Issues in Biomedical Engineering will be held on April 20 and 21, 2013, at SUNY Downstate Medical Center, where many of the topics mentioned earlier will be discussed further.
