ABSTRAKT

This review analyzes the literature on music therapy and neurorehabilitation from 1981 to the present day. It discusses the relevance of hemispheric lateralization and cognitive processes, as well as clinical approaches and research in physical rehabilitation, speech and language revalidation and cognitive/psychological adjustment. The literature includes many small single-case studies and descriptive research that provide insights into the way music therapy has developed and been applied in this field. More quantitative research is required to validate the effects of music therapy. Publications in refereed journals should cover a much wider readership than at present. Growth of music therapy services will depend on stronger outcome measures and wider dissemination of clinical techniques.
