ABSTRAKT

Among noncommunicable disorders, low-back pain (LBP) and neck pain are increasingly becoming a global threat. Although yearly prevalence of LBP in India occurs in 6.2% of the population, negligible information is available on mechanisms that deliver sustainable evidence-based care to those with spine pain. Here, we report on the organization, operation, and outcome of a care-delivery model in a tertiary teaching hospital, in collaboration with a nongovernmental organization that, at no added cost, offered evidence-based sustainable and affordable care to underserved individuals of Navi Mumbai and the Raigad district. In November 2016, the Mahatma Gandhi Mission (MGM) School of Physiotherapy established the MGM World Spine Care (WSC) Clinic, in collaboration with WSC Europe, in the physiotherapy department of MGM Hospital. The WSC team introduced the approach adopted by the Global Spine Care Initiative. The model was modified according to cultural and local needs, and a local team was trained in evaluation, evidence-based treatment, and record keeping. Major components of treatment included empowering patients with education, reassurance, exercise, and self-care strategies. From inception to December 2018, 2244 patients with spine pain sought care at the MGM WSC Clinic; 59% presented with LBP and 32% with neck pain. These patients were treated with core-strengthening, flexibility, and mobility exercises. Almost 50% of patients were discharged with self-care. The MGM WSC Clinic worked diligently for 2 yr to promote sustainable, integrated, and evidence-based spine care for the underserved population of urban and rural areas.
