DISCRETE ORDINATE METHOD WITH A NEW QUADRATURE SCHEME
ABSTRAKT
Evaluation of the radiative component in heat transfer problems is difficult and expensive. To address this problem, in the recent past, attention has been focused on improving the computational efficiency of various approximate methods. The discrete ordinate method (DOM) is one of the most widely used methods and to make this method more attractive, various types of quadrature schemes have been suggested. In the present paper a simple quadrature scheme that uses ray directions in a manner similar to the conventional quadrature scheme used in the DOM but does not involve complicated mathematics for its determination has been suggested. The new scheme satisfies all the required moments. To test the suitability of the new scheme, three benchmark problems with absorbing, emitting and isotropically scattering medium were considered. For the same number of ordinates, the DOM with the proposed quadrature scheme was found to give accurate results.
