FORM BIREFRINGENT STRUCTURES MATCHING TO FREE SPACE IN THE TERAHERTZ FREQUENCY RANGE
ABSTRACT
Differential phase sections (DPS) are in considerable use as polarization converters, components of the continuous phase shifters, and frequency shifters to development of the polarization radio measuring equipment. In its turn, the waves of terahertz (THz) frequency range are widely implemented in radio astronomy, radio spectroscopy, biomedical investigations and so on. THz transmission lines and ducts are elaborated mainly on the quasi-optical principles. In this connection the application of dielectric having birefringence properties, in particular, fort birefringence offers the greatest promise for the quasi-optical DPS. One of the important requirements for the DPSs development is matching to free space. The paper discusses ways of matching of the birefrindent structures in the form of multilayer stack of alternating dielectric plates with different permittivities. The matching layer is formed by plates of the birefringent structure projecting above its surface. In the first case projecting plates have transverse grooves, in the second case the plates are fabricated without grooves. The method of integral functionals in the frequency domain for full-wave problem of monochromatic plane wave scattering from the grating consisting of lossless dielectric bars is used for calculation such structures. An experimental study of the structure models was carried out and confirmed the possibility of matching in the THz frequency range using the methods under consideration.
