Successions and Main Stages of Phytoplankton Formation in the Kremenchug Reservoir
ABSTRACT
Long-term research data (1960-1994) on structural and functional characteristics of phytoplankton in the Kremenchug reservoir have been analyzed in the retrospective aspect. Literature data, as well as original information obtained by the author, are used in this publication. Five stages of ecological succession and three types of phytoplankton formation in the reservoir were distinguished. They are related mainly to the changes in the role of phytoplankton in the Dnieper cascade in the course of building reservoirs (transformation of the formerly head Kremenchug reservoir into an intra-cascade reservoir). Autogenic succession is the main type of successions; it is determined by the bioproductional activity of phytoplankton.
