EXACT SOLUTION TO THE THERMAL BOUNDARY LAYER EQUATION FOR CYLINDERS IN FLUIDS WITH LOW PRANDTL NUMBERS

ABSTRACT

The exact solution of thermal boundary layer equation is found for a circular cylinder in cross flow of fluid with low Prandtl number, when the flow is considered as potential one. It is proved, that the constant temperature boundary condition for the cylinder surface can be satisfied for the interval [0,x*) where x* = 2arctan√2 corresponds to angular coordinate θ* = 109.5 °, coinciding with the coordinate of onset of a dynamic boundary layer separation in a laminar flow. A particular case is considered for the fluid temperature distribution near the top of the cylinder to be described by the complimentary error function. It is shown that this solution corresponds to a complicate nonmonotonic surface temperature distribution.
