ABSTRACT

Seven species of red algae, Dermonema abbottiae, Geladium usmanghanii, Helminthocladia nizamuddinii, Hypnea pannosa, Scinaia hatei, S. moniliformis subsp. Pakistanensis, and S. saifullahii were collected and extracted with hexane-CHCl3 and MeOH. The seaweed extracts revealed the presence of 13 saturated and 6 unsaturated fatty acids by GLC and GC-MS, 22 different sterols and 3 sesquiterpenes by (El, FAB, FD and HR)-MS and (1H and 13C)-NMR spectroscopy. Palmitic acid (C16:0) was found in maximum amounts and as the major acid, followed by margaric (C17:0) and stearic (C18:0) acids. The major sterol was cholesterol, which was followed by β-sitosterol. The sesquiterpenes were only isolated from H. pannosa.
