On the distribution patterns and dispersal of Actinocyclus normanii (Greg.) Hust. emend. Genkal et Korneva (Bacillariophyta) in the reservoirs of the Volga River Basin
ABSTRACT
Probable explanations of the distribution patterns and dispersal of Actinocyclus normanii (Greg.) Hust. amend. Genkal et Korneva (Bacillariophyta) recorded between 1986-1998 in the reservoirs of the Volga River Basin are discussed. It is likely that migration of this species from the Caspian Sea was favored by changes in hydroclimatic processes, in particular the processes of maerocirculation, and also by the geochemical peculiarities of the Volga catchment area that influenced the chemical composition of water. The geochemieal peculiarities of the Volga catchment area were responsible for discontinuity (disjunction) of the geographic range (area of distribution) of this species.
