ABSTRACT

Data on periphyton algae growing in the cooling pond of the Chernobyl NPS after the accident (1986) are presented for the first time. In the cooling pond, periphyton algae occurred widely, were highly diverse in their species composition and abundant. A total of 140 species of periphyton algae represented by 162 infraspecific taxa (including those containing nomenclatural types of species) belonging to six divisions have been found in the cooling pond in 1994. Essential differences in the distribution of phytoperiphyton in the sections of the cooling pond differing in the level of heating (judging from the species abundance, complex of the dominant species and species composition) were noted. Community dominants were blue-green algae, diatoms, and filamentous green algae. Blue-green algae prevailed in the section of the cooling pond subjected to considerable heating, filamentous green algae - in the section with minimal heating.
