SINOPSIS
The process of sulfate reduction in bottom sediments of 23 lakes of different trophic levels was investigated. It has been found that in summer in fresh water bodies the numbers of sulfate reducing bacteria, the rate of the process of sulfate reduction, and the content of hydrogen sulfide varied over a wide range increasing from oligotrophic to eutrophic lakes. The main ecological factors influencing the process of sulfate reduction were revealed.
