SINOPSIS

Results of comprehensive studies of the ice cores taken in 2007−2008 in the coastal and open parts of the southern section of Lake Baikal are given in the paper. The studied biotope was characterized by a high biodiversity, including bacteria, Actinomycetes, flagellates, and algae. The composition of organisms, and also the quantitative characteristics of their development, changed from year to year and over the area of water of the lake. The biological activity of the ice was rather high. Hydrochemical and hydrobiological analysis has shown that the layers of cores with a high concentration of organisms were characterized by a low content of silicon, phosphorus, and nitrate. In this case, the process of organism decomposition resulted in the increase in the concentration of ammonium in ice column.
