SINOPSIS

Winter under the ice water bloom formed by Aphanizomenon gracile Lemmermann was observed in a large freshwater pond located at the site of the former peat quarry. In the shallow water zone, algal biomass accounted for 301.51 g/m3, whereas in the deep-water zone it was 549.73-651.06 g/m3. The spatial distribution of algal numbers and biomass over the area of water of the pond and the regularities of their direct vertical stratification in water column are discussed in the paper. The morphological and dimensional characteristics of the studied population were compared to literature data. 1t has been found that the studied population of A. gracile did not differ from algal populations registered in various water bodies of the world. Possible reasons of the phenomenon of water bloom registered in the water body at the "pioneer" stage of its succession were revealed based on results of the analysis of the studied abiotic factors, including climatic characteristics (water and air temperature in winter 2017-2018), the content of nutrients, organic matter, dissolved oxygen, and calcium and magnesium, and also water hardness and pH.
