Cerium Oxide Nanoparticles Restore Erythrocyte Stability to Acid Hemolysis in Old Rats
SINOPSIS
In in vivo and in vitro experiments, we studied the effect of cerium dioxide nanoparticles on the erythrocyte stability to acid hemolysis in old rats. The latter was induced by proton penetration into the matrix of erythrocytes. In in vivo experiments, the analysis of the kinetic curves of acid hemolysis caused by the penetration of protons into the matrix of erythrocytes has shown a significant reduction in the erythrocyte stability index, duration of complete hemolysis, and the time of maximum hemolysis. The portion of labile "old" cells increased, and, conversely, the portion of "young" erythrocytes decreased in old animals, compared with the adults. An introduction of cerium oxide nanoparticles (0.1 mg / kg) to the old rats per os for 14 days fully restored erythrocyte stability to acid hemolysis. At that, Cerium oxide nanoparticles decreased the portion of labile "old" erythrocytes in circulation and, conversely, significantly increased the portion of "young" overstable erythrocytes, which indicates a marked rejuvenating effect. The experiments in vitro have shown the absence of direct hemolytic action of cerium oxide nanoparticles at the concentrations of 10-3 M − 10-12 M.
