SINOPSIS

This chapter examines the importance of interfacial effects for film condensation. It uses some simple scaling arguments and previous results from the literature to determine when interfacial shear stress, vapor superheat, noncondensable gas effects, augmentation of interfacial shear stress due to mass transfer, Marangoni convection, and interfacial waviness are important in film condensation. It also examines turbulent transport in the liquid film and the very important phenomenon of interfacial damping of the eddy viscosity.
