ONSET OF THE QUANTUM CHAOS (WAVE CHAOS) IN A CYLINDRICAL RESONANT CAVITY WITH SINGULAR DISTURBANCES
RÉSUMÉ
The frequency spectra pertinent to a quasi-optical cylindrical microwave cavity have been studied experimentally in the range of 26 to 38 GHz. The resonant structure contained thin metal rods playing the part of singular disturbances. The spectrum has been studied in dependence on the number of the disturbing rods in the structure. As has been found, the spectrum demonstrates a Poisson distribution of inter-line intervals as long as the number of disturbances is small. This means that the structure remains quasi-regular, showing just early symptoms of chaotic behavior. However, the spectrum undergoes a qualitative change as the number of singular insertions is increased. Specifically, the distribution function of inter-line intervals approaches to the Wigner form, which may suggest appearance of the 'level repulsion' effect in the spectrum and presence of the quantum chaos. Thus, it has been shown experimentally that quantum chaos may appear in a quasi-regular system solely with a sufficient number of singular disturbances.
