RÉSUMÉ

The central nervous system (CNS) of adult mammals, including humans, serves a typical example of organs that are not restored. However, currently, innovative treatment options aimed at regenerating of damaged CNS tissues have been attracting the growing interest. These options are based on the latest achievements in the field of stem cells and neurology. The recapitulation of normal neural development has become a vital strategy for CNS regeneration. Normal development of the CNS is triggered by induction of the stem cells in it, in other words, neural stem cells (NSCs). Thus, introduction or mobilization of NSCs could be expected to regenerate the CNS through both activation of endogenous regenerative capacity and transplantation of NSCs. This review elucidates recent data on the progress in basic stem cell biology, as well as the mechanisms of NSCs' ontogenic changes, the prospective of identification, potential differentiation, and their therapeutic applications have been elucidated.
