RÉSUMÉ
Particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique was used to perform velocity measurements in the near and developing regions of orifice jets to determine the effect of nozzle geometry on the flow field. The orifice geometries studied include round, square, rectangle and ellipse (of aspect ratio 2). The Reynolds number based on equivalent diameter (d) of the nozzles was kept constant at approximately Red = 5400. The rectangular and elliptical nozzles show greater mass entrainment, higher spread rates and greater Reynolds shear stress levels when compared to the square and round nozzles.
