RÉSUMÉ

We analyze the sensitivity of turbulent wake past a D-shaped cylinder using classical tools of linear perturbation dynamics (stability analyses, adjoint based gradients). We show that a small control cylinder suitably positioned in the cylinder wake can alter the shedding frequency, as predicted by the eigenfrequency of the most unstable global mode to the mean flow. The results obtained in the frame of 2-D, unsteady RANS exhibit good agreement with recent experimental data reported by Parezanovi´c and Cadot (JFM 2012). The originality of the approach lies in the fact that it allows performing beforehand identification of the sensitive regions, i.e. the actually controlled states are never computed in practice, which paves the way for the design of future control strategies.
