The Role of Polysaccharides Derived from Medicinal Mushrooms in Cancer Treatment Programs: Current Perspectives (Review)
ABSTRACT
Mushroom-derived polysaccharides are now considered to be compounds that are able to modulate animal and human immune responses and to inhibit certain tumor growths. This review sets out the current information on the use of various mushroom polysaccharides in cancer treatments. Many human cancer cell lines have been studied, and in some cases direct cytotoxic effects have been demonstrated. Several mushroom polysaccharide compounds have proceeded through Phases I, II, and III clinical trials and are used extensively and successfully in Asia to treat various cancers. It is considered that such proprietary mushroom compounds will be seen mainly as complementary or adjunctive therapies to be used together with mainstream care therapies.
