ABSTRACT

The aging process is fraught with many physiological changes, including decrements in cardiorespiratory function and loss of bone mass. Although the effects of aging affect both males and females, this article focuses on women, specifically the value of exercise for women as they age related to cardiorespiratory and bone health, as well as menopausal symptoms. The number of women entering menopause is increasing as the U.S. population ages. Because women now spend almost one-third of their lives postmenopause, maintaining good health is vital, and physical activity appears beneficial in many areas.
