ABSTRACT

This paper reviews the current scientific information available regarding the relationships between biomechanical measurement, plantar skin ulceration, and rehabilitation decision making. Particular attention is given to the association of peripheral neuropathy in diabetic patients and biomechanical correlates of plantar ulceration. Rehabilitation and therapeutic treatment including orthotic prescription and fabrication are presented using a case study, including a clinical methodology shown to reduce plantar foot surface pressure and the associated breakdown of skin on the plantar surface.
