ESTIMATION OF AERODYNAMIC AND ACOUSTIC PERFORMANCES OF COUNTER-ROTATING OPEN ROTORS

RESUMO

This paper presents the results of experimental data processing for the COMBY2 open rotor model developed by Baranov Central Institute of Aviation Motors (CIAM) (the COMBY1 open rotor model was designed by CIAM under the European DREAM project). Data measured in tests carried out in the T-104 and T-107 TsAGI wind tunnels are compared with the performances calculated using software packages developed at CIAM. For aerodynamic performance, integral characteristics (absolute values of thrust and torque, thrust coefficient, and power and efficiency of the rotors), and local flow parameters (radial distribution of flow parameters downstream and upstream the rotors, and pressure distribution at the hub downstream and upstream the rotors) are compared. Analysis of numerical and experimental data demonstrates good qualitative agreement. However, the quantitative agreement can only be considered as satisfactory, especially for the integral characteristics (thrust coefficient, power, and efficiency). Noticeable disagreements between calculations and tests are supposedly due to peculiarities in the calculation method and/or difficulties in determination of forces and torques acting on the hub of each rotor. These values should be subtracted from experimental data in order to find forces and torques acting only on the blades for which the calculated data were found. The acoustic characteristics of the open rotor model are calculated using CIAM's 3DAS software. Fields of pulsations in the near field and radiation patterns and spectra in the far field are calculated.
