RESUMO

Hydrogen made from steam reforming of the aqueous fraction of bio-oil can be used for the hydrotreatment of its non-aqueous fraction (also called pyrolytic lignin) in liquid transportation fuels. Four model bio-oil source compounds (2-butanone, 1-methoxy-2-propanol, ethyl acetate, and butyraldehyde) were studied in this work to investigate the effects of their reactivity in the steam reforming process over supported noble metal catalysts. Alumina-supported platinum (Pt), ruthenium (Ru), and palladium (Pd) catalysts (metal = 0.5%) were used in a fixed-bed reactor to study their reactions with weak solutions (steam/carbon = 20 mol/mol) of these compounds at temperatures between 623 and 773 K. It was found that butyraldehyde was most reactive, whereas 2-butanone was the least convertible reactant. Among the catalysts, Pt/aluminum oxide was most selective to H2 production. All of the catalysts were characterized using electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and CO2 temperature-programmed desorption methods. It is expected that this work will contribute to the development of effective bio-oil reforming catalysts.
