RESUMO

Three species of Scinaia namely S. hatei Børgesen, S. moniliformis J. Agardh sub sp. pakistanensis Afaq-Husain et Shameel and S. saifullahii Afaq-Husain et Shameel were collected from coastal areas near Karachi (Pakistan) during November and December 2009 and extracted with hexane-CHCl3 and MeOH. Altogether 13 fatty acids (FAs) were identified from lipid fraction of the extracts by GLC and GC-MS. Both the variety and quantity of saturated FAs (81.81-94.56%) were much greater than those of unsaturated ones (5.43-19.32%). The FA profile ranged from C12 to C24 except C19, C21 and C23. Palmitic acid was the principal FA and found in the largest proportion (37.79-42.64%). Oleic acid was present in greatest quantity (5.43-8.79%) among unsaturated FAs. Except linoleic acid no polyenoic FA could be detected. Seven sterols have been identified by (El, FAB, FD & HR)-MS and (1H & 13C)-NMR spectroscopy from the extract of each species, constituting a generic profile of 13 different sterols distributed in C27 to C29 compounds (6 cholestasterols, 3 ergosterols and 4 stigmasterols). Each species contained cholesterol as the major sterol, cholestadiols occurred next to them and β-sitosterol in substantial amount. Minor quantities of cholestatrienols, ergosterols and stigmasterols were detected.
