Abstract of "Ethics in Dentistry: Changing Trends and Future Challenges"

Ethical issues and concerns in dentistry are receiving increasing attention and importance that may be due to the increasing ethical dilemmas and questions that arise during the delivery of dental services. Dentistry has faced tremendous developments in the past decade that have led to the availability of numerous advanced dental materials. The availability of newer materials and the knowledge, technical skill, and the decision-making ability of the dentist would help to judge and plan the best treatment services to meet the patient needs. In this procedure of delivery of services, several ethical dilemmas and debates arise that are challenging the professional status of the dentistry profession. Ethics in dentistry is a continuous work in progress that requires regular evaluation to reduce the deficiencies, thus attaining morality and safety of the human being. This paper addresses the following aspects: a brief review on the ADA code of ethics; a comparison between past and present trends of ethics in dentistryunlike in the past, the current ethics course in dental school proves to bring out an effective awareness in students; the establishment of the American Society of Dental Ethics; the launch of a dental ethics manual by the World Dental Federation; several continuing-education programs and workshops that emphasize the importance of ethics in dentistry; several issues of ethical debate in dentistry that include controversies on the use and removal of amalgam, selection of materials during aesthetic restorations, selection of treatment procedures during oral health rehabilitation treatment procedures that include TMJ pain management, and other aspects; and future promises and challenges to maintain the professionalism of dentistry.
