Is There Such a Thing as an Unethical Professional? A Taxonomy of Positions
Краткое описание
In this article, I examine the relationship between ethical skills and other skills in the professions. I argue that a range of positions are possible, ranging from externalism about professional ethics−in which ethical skills are seen as a completely separate set of skills from professional skills−to radical internalism about professional ethics−in which someone could not be seen as an true professional unless he or she possessed both ethical skills and had ethical goals for his or her work. I also lay out some recommendations for ways to interpret these positions descriptively and prescriptively. Finally, I examine the implications of these positions for ethics codes and recommend that professionals aspire to a "strong internalist" position about professional ethics as a way of innovating in professional ethics.
