Краткое описание
Contrary to the old notion that the adult brain is static and no new neurons are formed in the adult mammalian brain, the recent concept of neurogenesis has gained substantial momentum in medicine and the neurosciences. It is now evident that neurogenesis does occur in a wide range of areas in the adult brain in several mammalian species. A multitude of factors seems to have an influential role in the process of neurogenesis. This review focuses on some historical aspects and principles and procedures in the context of neurogenesis. The role of stress in neurogenesis is highlighted. Potential applications of neurogenesis in clinical medicine are discussed.
